Yoono attended Blog World this past weekend in Vegas and it was a lot of fun. I am seeing more and more how blogging is connecting people. Most of these connections are being made with very unlikely parties where this person may have no reason to ever strike up a conversation with the other but the power of The Internet and social networking has sparked conversations and helped to build real life friendships.
How did this happen? It’s all about transparency and telling The Internet a lot about you. The community can’t connect with you if they don’t know who you are. Having a blog about dogs isn’t enough anymore as more users move to social networking as a way to connect with the author of a blog they enjoy. Karen and Bill just retired and write stories about their travels around the US in their RV. Their stories and photos are lovely and they develop a following but their blog posts are written after they’ve already left their last location and not happening while they are there.
Slowly, Karen joins networks like Flickr, Facebook and Twitter and begins to share her thoughts, actions and photos as they happen. It’s raw, unedited and real. The best part is that it’s instant. Instant and real are the two main focuses for today’s social networks. Karen added buttons on her site with links to her social networking profiles and quickly had readers adding her as a friend or following her on Twitter. Soon, a tweet saying that she’s heading in to St. Paul and a Flickr photo of the “Welcome to St. Paul” street sign spark a ton of replies and comments offering tips of what to see, where to go and people were offering buy the couple lunch.
Karen has shifted from a faceless blogger to someone who you can be friends with and connect with. Karen became real. Karen’s story is the same as many bloggers in today’s world. I saw that over the weekend at Blog World. A party would end and people would be outside of the venue on their phones checking Twitter to see what’s going on next. During sessions, a search for that session’s hashtag would show the thoughts of everyone in the room as the session leaders were talking. On my Yoono sidebar, I would see friends uploading photos and tagging them with blogworld in real time while at a session.
I felt connected the entire weekend via Twitter, Flickr and Facebook with everyone that was at the conference. The revolution of blogs and social media is really heating up and soon we won’t need to explain one or other because both will go hand in hand. I’m just happy to be a part of it.
