Many of my friends have told me that they hate the new Facebook. There are dozens of groups and very vocal users standing up against the service. It took me a full day to get aclimated to the new design and that’s it. I was using the new elements, exploring new features and doing things faster with less problems. The millions of very vocal users are really starting to get on my nerves. I’m not going to say that you should leave Facebook completely but I’m certainly taking Facebook’s side and I’m going to tell you to get used to the new look. I did poll the audience via Twitter and learned a couple of things that were really bugging users.

1. The bottom control bar needs to go away.
2. How do I find my applications? They’re all gone.
3. The news feed is broken all of the time.
4. Profile organization with tabs is just not easy to use.
5. The profile wall is too sporadic with weird alignment and spacing

There are certainly less complaints than if I had posted this last month. That’s a sign that people are getting used to the new look and only a few are holding on to their peeves. There’s nothing actually wrong with the new design but those of us on Facebook for 2+ years are having problems with change.

Let’s discuss these four things.
1. The bottom bar is great and totally cancels out the number 2 complaint. The bottom bar shows all of your applications and is totally customizable. There also needed to be an always on toolbar to house Facebook Chats and since those chats follow you around the site, the toolbar works exceptionally well.

2. You applications are always available in the bottom toolbar. If you’re looking for new apps then yes I can see why you’re complaining. I was never a fan of applications. I think I only have 1 installed.

3. The news feed is broken. It’s a brand new way of organizing information and sometimes it has some really bad lag and doesn’t display things correctly. I’m hoping that this is fixed soon.

4. I love the tabs. This time last year, when applications were introduced, profiles became very myspacey and clutter ensued. Just seeing someone’s info or wall posts became a chore. The tabs are a welcome change for someone like me who doesn’t care that you own an iPhone or if you’re voting for Obama and just wants to see what your email address is.

5. The profile wall is a lot different but if you use it for a few weeks, it becomes easier and you will see that the organization compliments all of the wall activity going on. At first glance, it’s a bunch of typefaces and sizes mashed onto a single page but each of those means different things and I like the icons showing if its an event, group or status update.

Overall, The new Facebook is better and we’ll all quickly realize that. I think what’s tiring is the millions of users that just don’t like change even if they are already seeing the benefits of the new design.

I myself want the bookmarks at the bottom of your page as well as the apps being reached on all pages. Now you have to go to your homepage every time you want to go to a different app. It takes way too much time overall. The other way was much faster. I hate all the new Facebook things but this I think is the worst!!!!!!!!!!

  • I was one of the "new facebook haters" but I have to say I love it now. I used to hate on the old facebook where it could take you ages to locate the person's wall comments, you had to scroll through all this crazy application madness that was scattered on the page like stripper name, fave movies/music/friends/cities to visit....seriously...I don't care I just wanted to ready the user's wall....it was like an information overload!! Now it's so much easier to use I looove the tabs and the wall/news feed is really cool!!! wooo...new facebook!!
  • Amen on the new facebook layout love! My only gripe with it is that because of all of the fancy AJAX stuff going on, it can run kind of slow at times - minor nitpick.

I like the ability to comment on individual items on your wall, that helps with keeping conversations in context.
