Welcome to AddOnConDecember 9th, 2009 was the 2nd annual Add-On-Con which took place at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. This year, Yoono was involved as a fellow organizer as we helped organize a demo session and were honored with the most important duty of all at such events: securing the beer for the after party.

Add-on Con bills itself as:

The only conference designed specifically for people who build and market browser add-ons. Organized by members of the add-on community, this one day conference brings together platform vendors, developers and marketers with the goal of facilitating communication and sharing knowledge.

Thanks to our friends at OneRiot for conceiving and bringing this conference to life – it was long overdue and we’re excited to watch and help it get better each year.

Comparing 2008 and 2009 is dPresenting at AddOnConifficult as the focus of building and marketing Add-Ons isn’t drastically different but the big word this year was “marketplace” as Apple and other players have taken been wildly successful at selling small, single purpose applications for 99 cents and turning it into a billion dollar a year business. Representatives from Mozilla, Google and Microsoft were on hand and the pressing question was, “I develop an add-on for your browser and I’d like to make money.”  There are some major hurdles here given the variations in browser platforms and the historically free nature of add-ons but conceptually we believe this is where the industry as a whole needs to go.  As one of the leading add-on developers we are committed to helping it get there.

There were a few technical previews delivered from the browser developers like Google’s Demo of their extension development interface and Mozilla showed off the future of Firefox and Firefox Mobile. All in all, it was a great day conference 7UPfor Add-On developers and those who want to monetize their add-ons.

As you know, Yoono is an add-on for both Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer. We’re proud to be a partner with both companies and the conference certainly showed there is a vast community of developers just like us who are doing amazing things in this space.  That said, Yoono is also committed to being a multi-platform offering as we’ve shown most recently with our standalone desktop version of Yoono.  We believe that add-ons provide unique advantages and as the leading social aggregation add-on we’re fortunate to have a foothold in the marketplace via the add-on community.  But we also recognize that users want to be able to access their social stream in a variety of ways and that’s something we’ll be looking to address in 2010.  Stay tuned!

Holiday Party Flyer! Yoono has teamed up with Sun Microsystems and JS-KIT to host a Holiday Bailout party next Monday at Harlot here in San Francisco. It’s a free party and one of the only events this season with free food and drinks! Below is the full info and RSVP link.

Tis the season to celebrate with friends and family. It’s also the season for Silicon Valley to explode with holiday parties. Things are a little different this year so Yoono and Sun teamed up with some friends so we could bring you the Holiday Bailout Party.

Thanks to co-sponsorships from Sun Microsystems, JS-KIT, and Red Stripe we will be offering up free food drinks at Harlot on Monday, December 15th.

Come early and stay as late as you want. The DJ will be spinning dance music with a holiday theme, food will be passed and depending on if you’re naughty or nice, the drinks will keep flowing.

Glide Church is a great organization offering help to families in San Francisco so we want to do all we can to help them. You’ll receive one drink ticket for each unwrapped toy or non-perishable food item you bring to the party. Glide provides food for SF residents in need 365 days a year, as well as toys for children who will go without at Christmas. You can learn more at Glide.org

Future-Works and Bub.blicio.us will be upstairs conducing interviews and taking photos. Justin.TV will be streaming live from Harlot to the web.

After 9PM, Harlot stays will open to the public and we encourage all party guests to stick around and celebrate the holidays in style.

Come early, raise a glass to the holiday season and get down to some rocking festive beats. Don’t forget to bring a non-perishable food item or toy. This party is open to EVERYBODY so invite all of your friends.

I’m doing all that is possible to raise money, toys and food this holiday season for Glide Memorial Church. Their contributions to this community are huge and I encourage all party attendees to bring a contribution.

RSVP on Facebook (link) and invite all of your friends. This party you can’t miss.

Tweets and Dreenks November Meetup

This past Thursday (the 6th) we held our 3rd Tweets and Dreenks here in San Francisco. The party drinkup and party tweetup was more intimate than our last affair at House of Shields. This time, we moved it to Mars Bar on 7th street and all of the drink tickets were gone by the end of the night. Our co-sponsor, CrossLoop was there as well. Thanks everyone for coming out.
.
I hope we can do a December Tweets and Dreenks but it may be postponed until January due to another social event we’re doing in December. Stay tuned!

Tweets & Dreenks Last night, October the 15th, we partnered up with Hubpages to host Tweets & Dreenks. it was a huge success. Nearly 70 people came out to have some drinks with us and talk about social media, Web 2.0 and we were able to get feedback from our very valuable users. The event started at 6PM after our friends at Valleywag put the wrong time on their blog entry. All in all, we gave out 80 drink tickets, 10 shirts and a plethora of glow in the dark Yoono wristbands.

Folks from Paypal, Myxer, Motorola, Bitpusher, newswag and Kickapps were in attendance we received some great suggestions for improvements to Yoono. Thanks to everyone who came out. We’ll be doing an event next month as well around the same time so stay tuned to this blog or friend us on Upcoming.

Everyone is on Twitter and every event that I attend in the bay area benefits when a hastag is used. Here is the definition of a hashtag (from Twitter wiki):

Hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets. They’re like tags on Flickr, only added inline to your post. You create a hashtag simply by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: #hashtag.

Hashtags were developed as a means to create “groupings” on Twitter, without having to change the basic service. The hash symbol is a convention borrowed primarily from IRC channels, and later from Jaiku’s channels.

Now that we’re all on the same page, it has helped tremendously when going to a meetup, conference or party and searching Twitter for the hashtag and I can see if the event is packed, if the venue may have changed and see people’s thoughts on the event. I always search Twitter for that particular event to see who’s there, on their way and what they are talking about. It’s genius and conferences like Blog World expo or TechCrunch50 really benefited from the hastag concept.

This is an open message to all event organizers. If you’re posting an event online, please give the event a hashtag before the event begins. On every posting whether it’s Facebook, Upcoming or Eventbrite, there needs to be a hastag specified. It’s extremely easy. If I’m doing a Twitter meetup for Yoono, I’ll just say on the listing that the hastag is #yoonotweetup and that’s it. People involved in the event will begin using it and now we’re all in our own chat room. A good example of this is the #BWE08 hastag for Blog World. People that attended the conference are still using it to communicate 2 weeks after the conference ended.

Let’s start making this part of the planning process and not an afterthought. It benefits everyone.

I’m just saying that there is a lot going on this week and I’m going to attend all of these. If you’re going to these events let me know.

Sep 22

Day 3 of Blogworld Expo was just as good as the first two days. It was a time for attendees to chat in a more relaxed atmosphere and continue attending sessions. Personally, I continued on the show floor making connections and talking to people at social networking. The show floor closed at 3 so we sat in the new media area with friends to talk about the weekend as a whole and catch up on email.

The entire convention ended at 5PM and we had to move the party elsewhere so an impromptu Tweetup was formed at the MGM Grand. Tons of bloggers arrived to share some drinks and stories. Of course, the time came when we had to be on a flight back to San Francisco so we left the Tweetup and headed to the airport.

It was pretty amazing as I followed the conversations over Twitter, bloggers actually stayed an extra couple of nights in Las Vegas to continue the festivities. Many held Tweetups all across the city (7 in total) throughout the night. I saw around midnight that bloggers that were still in town were arranging tours, dinners and other activities for the following day. As I write this, Blogworld is over but the fun continues in Las Vegas. Blogworld was a tremendous experience for everyone who attended and we can’t wait to go back next year.
