We’ve created a series of video clips that will help make Yoono easier to use. Our team has put together these quick screencasts as a way to make everyone a Yoono Power-User. Expect more of these videos every few days.

Today, we’d like to talk about sharing and how easy it is to share rich media with friends across your favorite social networks. For starters, let’s talk about sharing images with your friends. In Yoono 7, we make this even easier and we’ve also added a new photo sharing site, YFrog.

First up, let’s talk about YFrog:

As a follow up, here’s a more advanced video that shows how to share links to friends in only 2 clicks.  Yoono will automatically insert a shortened bit.ly URL of the page you’re looking at when you double click on the share icon in the status box.

This post covers a Twitter basic – staying on top of your mentions and direct messages, and a quick way to optimize Yoono for netbooks or other machines with small screen real estate.

Our first video shows how Yoono 7 makes it easy to never miss a direct message or mention on Twitter ever again.  One of the consistent points of feedback we get from new users is how they have always missed or not even been aware of mentions or direct messages in Twitter until they started using Yoono.  These are great features of the Twitter platform that are of course only great if you know about them!

Up next we have a quick video to optimize Yoono for use with a netbook. Check it out.

Welcome to AddOnConDecember 9th, 2009 was the 2nd annual Add-On-Con which took place at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. This year, Yoono was involved as a fellow organizer as we helped organize a demo session and were honored with the most important duty of all at such events: securing the beer for the after party.

Add-on Con bills itself as:

The only conference designed specifically for people who build and market browser add-ons. Organized by members of the add-on community, this one day conference brings together platform vendors, developers and marketers with the goal of facilitating communication and sharing knowledge.

Thanks to our friends at OneRiot for conceiving and bringing this conference to life – it was long overdue and we’re excited to watch and help it get better each year.

Comparing 2008 and 2009 is dPresenting at AddOnConifficult as the focus of building and marketing Add-Ons isn’t drastically different but the big word this year was “marketplace” as Apple and other players have taken been wildly successful at selling small, single purpose applications for 99 cents and turning it into a billion dollar a year business. Representatives from Mozilla, Google and Microsoft were on hand and the pressing question was, “I develop an add-on for your browser and I’d like to make money.”  There are some major hurdles here given the variations in browser platforms and the historically free nature of add-ons but conceptually we believe this is where the industry as a whole needs to go.  As one of the leading add-on developers we are committed to helping it get there.

There were a few technical previews delivered from the browser developers like Google’s Demo of their extension development interface and Mozilla showed off the future of Firefox and Firefox Mobile. All in all, it was a great day conference 7UPfor Add-On developers and those who want to monetize their add-ons.

As you know, Yoono is an add-on for both Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer. We’re proud to be a partner with both companies and the conference certainly showed there is a vast community of developers just like us who are doing amazing things in this space.  That said, Yoono is also committed to being a multi-platform offering as we’ve shown most recently with our standalone desktop version of Yoono.  We believe that add-ons provide unique advantages and as the leading social aggregation add-on we’re fortunate to have a foothold in the marketplace via the add-on community.  But we also recognize that users want to be able to access their social stream in a variety of ways and that’s something we’ll be looking to address in 2010.  Stay tuned!

In today’s post, we will show a few more tidbits about Twitter. The first is an advanced tip about searching your updates stream and the second is a  basic tip on previewing images in your stream.  Have a suggestion or question for a tip? Let us know in the comments.

First up we have a video that explores the ability to do a full text search across updates on all networks that are added to Yoono.  Yoono stores up to 25,000 of your recent updates (on your computer, not on our servers) and let’s you search them instantly.  Trying to find that tweet from a friend?  Want to know what your network is saying about Tiger Woods?  Now you can with our search capability.

Our second video in this post shows how you can easily preview images that are shared out by your friends via Twitter or your other networks.  Just hover over the image and get an expanded view in an overlay on your browser window (without navigating away from the page you are on).  Very handy!

Expect more of these videos every few days. Today, we take Twitter a step further with two more great tips! Let’s take a look at how you can translate tweets and view Twitter conversation threads via Yoono. In Yoono 7, you can translate a tweet with two clicks!  This can come in handy if for example you’re following a particular search keyword with the Twitter saved search feature and are getting results in foreign languages.  Check it out: You can also track conversations in Twitter simply by clicking “more” under any tweet.  If there is a series of replies to the tweet, you will see them in the expanded view.

In today’s series, we take a look at Twitter and how Yoono 7 has become the best always-on Twitter client available. We’re going to start with the basics and slowly move forward to more advanced tips.

Yoono lets you reply to tweets directly from the update itself, making it quick and easy to communicate with your Twitter friends in real-time.  Here’s how to reply to a tweet with Yoono:

Yoono 7 supports the new Twitter retweet design so you can retweet with one click.  Retweets will also be displayed in your timeline the same way they appear on Twitter.com with a retweet icon next to them.  Here’s how to retweet in Yoono:

One of our most frequently requested features has been the ability to share pictures from your computer via your Twitter account.  We’ve supported sharing web content (links, images, videos, etc.) for a long time now but until Yoono 7 hadn’t added support for uploads for Twitter in particular.  As we were designing Yoono 7 and adding this functionality we took a look around at some of the image sharing/hosting services out there and one of them stood out – Yfrog.

Making Yfrog our default service waPostingViaYoono_texts a no-brainer because:

  • We wanted something reliable and scalable. Yfrog’s infrastructure is powered by Imageshack which has been hosting media since 2003.  Imageshack reaches over 60 million monthly users and serves over 2.5 billion media hits/day.
  • We wanted something that was fast and easy. With YFrog and their use of oAuth we were able to quickly integrate this feature and make it seamless to Yoono users.  Your twitter credentials provided when you connect Yoono to Twitter are automatically used and media is shared in real-time.

To share an  image or video using Yfrog, just click on the camera icon in the status update box (see screenshot) and then click update.  The media is shared via a shortened URL across  Twitter and your other social networks.

It’s that easy…just like our decision to use YFrog.

Recently there has been a review of Firefox add-ons from a security perspective done by Nick Freeman that was presented at a security conference and covered here.  One of the add-ons cited in the review was Yoono and it unfortunately was highlighted as a security risk.  At Yoono we want to be totally transparent with our users so we wanted to address the issue as it has been picked up by several security blogs online.  Here are a few details:

  • On June 29, 2009 we were contacted by Nick Freeman from Security Assessment about a security vulnerability that he discovered in the version of Yoono that was available at the time, Yoono 6.1.0.
  • Nick did the right thing as as security analyst by informing the developer (us) first before publishing the details of the exploit publicly.  For those who don’t know, this is industry best practice as it gives the developer the chance fix it before any harm is done.
  • Without going into too much detail, the issue he discovered involved visiting a malicious website that presented an image with some code attached.  If a Yoono user shared this image with another user it could cause malicious code to execute on the user’s computer.  A serious issue, but relatively unlikely scenario in practice.
  • As soon as we were notified of the issue we started working on it and fixed it the same day.  We submitted our fix to Mozilla and the fixed version (6.1.1) was available to end users on July 6th as an automatic update.
  • We notified Nick that this issue had been fixed in Yoono 6.1.1.

We take all security issues very seriously and strive to address them as quickly as possible.  Unfortunately Nick’s review has only recently been published online and there are several issues with it from our perspective (due to the publishers of the information, not Nick’s initial assessment):

  • Several blogs have incorrectly cited the version numbers affected – suggesting 6.1.1 or 6.x or “possibly other versions” may be affected.  To be clear, this issue does not affect any version after 6.1.0 and has been fixed since July 2009.
  • Unfortunately readers of these articles are left with the mistaken impression that Yoono currently has this vulnerability because no note is made of when it was fixed or in which version it was fixed.

We are actively contacting blogs that have reposted incorrect information and asking them to change their information where it is incorrect.  But foremost we wanted to set the story straight here with you, our users.  As always, let us know if you have any questions.

After many months of hard work and reviewing feedback from thousands of users via Twitter, blogs and our support forums, we’re pleased to announce Yoono 7! We’re confident it delivers the best performance, feature set, and user experience of any Yoono product to date. Yoono 7 allows you to create an incredibly powerful real time social stream inside your browser (Yoono Desktop will also be updated SOON!) yet does it with a lightweight footprint from both a UI and system resources perspective. Here’s a quick overview of what’s new (for those of you who prefer a sit back and listen approach to learning, you can view the screencast at the bottom of this post!):

Support for new services & featuresAllUpdatesTab_blogpost

We took a look at the latest functionality available to third parties from all your favorite social networks and integrated them into Yoono 7:

  • LinkedIn – Yoono 7 is one of the first social apps to support LinkedIn’s brand new API. Get all your LinkedIn updates and update your status at the same time you update Twitter and Facebook.
  • Support for multiple accounts across your social networks – not just Twitter but multi-account support for Facebook, MySpace and more. Not only that but Yoono integrates a profile selector into Firefox for easy profile switching while browsing.
  • View your Facebook Inbox and Notifications within Yoono
  • Support for Twitter’s new retweet feature and layout
  • Easily upload photos to Twitter and your other social networks via our new partner yFrog.

Powerful Stream Management Tools

Your real time social stream flows quickly and we know you need tools to help you manage it.  In addition to the ability to hide any user or app in your stream, functionality we delivered in the previous release of Yoono, we’ve added:

Groups_blogpost

  • Yoono Groups – add users from any of your services to a Yoono Group and then filter your stream by group.  Top Friends, Tech News, Sneaker Pimps, you name it.
  • Support for Twitter Lists – view all your Twitter Lists in Yoono (support for creating and adding to lists coming soon)
  • Full text search of your social stream – Yoono 7 leverages SQLite support in html 5 to store up to 25,000 of your most recent updates and make them instantly searchable.  This is all done on your computer – not on our servers – for complete privacy.

The best performing, least resource intensive version of Yoono ever

  • We’ve rewritten much of Yoono in order to improve performance – it’s significantly faster and uses less memory and CPU than previous versions of Yoono and in our testing compares very favorably to other social apps (Adobe Air apps you know who you are!)
  • We’ve worked on improving connections to key social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace
  • We’ve added hardware and re-architected our Instant Messaging servers to improve reliability

…plus a ton of other improvements and additions that you’ve been clamoring for!  We’ll cover many of the above and some of the other new features of Yoono 7 in upcoming blog posts so stay tuned.  Today we’re launching the Yoono 7 version of our Firefox add-on (get it here) and we’ll follow up soon with updated versions of our Desktop app and IE add-on.  As always, we look forward to your feedback.  As an extra bonus, here is a screencast that demonstrates some of the new features of Yoono 7:
